About
newstraining brings together highlights of a variety of training programs and workshops I have presented around the country. The archived Topics share core tools and approaches in writing, editing, online media, presentation, and managing in a newsroom. In other posts, grouped under the newstraining category, there will be questions, responses, discussion and tips from myself and anyone else who would like to participate in this blog.
My backgro
und: I am currently Deputy Managing Editor Staff Development at The Arizona Republic, responsible for all newsroom training. I serve as writing coach and edit major projects. Since 2006, I’ve been part of the leadership team transforming the Republic into one of Gannett’s Information Centers. I also provide training at newspapers around the U.S. and Canada. In 2003, I helped create and am still a lead presenter for NewsTrain, a national touring workshop for frontline editors sponsored by APME. I designed and taught the American Press Institute’s first online seminar for copy editors, and have presented programs for the Poynter Institute, API, the Maynard Institute, Freedom Forum, and various National Writers Workshops. Before coming to the Republic, I was Features Editor, AME/Features-Business, and then for 10 years the Training Editor/Writing Coach at The Cincinnati Enquirer. I also worked as a writer and editor at the Midland (MI) Daily News, the Detroit Free Press, and as a senior editor at two magazines. I taught feature writing at the University of Cincinnati and speak regularly at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism, Arizona State University. I’m a graduate of the University of Michigan and hold a masters in training and human resource development from Xavier University.
